Funerals & Mourning - we work in partnership with Liberal Judaism to provide a burial and cremation scheme* that all our Members are eligible to join. Our Rabbis provide pastoral care for those in the last stages of life and support to their families through all the traditional stages of mourning. Prevailing practice is to let individuals and their families determine preferences regarding burial (including woodland burial) or cremation. Our Rabbis and leaders can give guidance where it is required and explain practices but no-one is compelled to carry out rituals that they do not feel comfortable with.
Our Burial and Cremation Scheme is set out in detail on a document which can be downloaded from here.
Peace of Mind
In reality many people join a synagogue to celebrate a life cycle event or to plan for the end of life. The ELELS Scheme gives you and your next of kin the certainty that support will be available and most or all costs will be covered immediately following a death.

Prayers and Readings on visiting re-opened cemeteries.
Cemeteries are preparing to re-open following their closure to the public due to the easing of the current lockdown restrictions. How and when they re-open will be determined by the cemetery authorities, although it is expected that restrictions will still apply to burials and stone-settings.
It is possible that you will soon be able to visit cemeteries, although with restrictions and limited or no access to prayer books. Rabbi Jacobi has produced this short liturgy - Prayers and Readings on Visiting Re-opened Cemeteries - which you print or download to a tablet or other mobile device, before visiting the cemeteries.
We will, of course, share with you any information we receive about the re-opening of cemeteries as soon as it becomes available.
