ELELS Council, like many others, is monitoring the continuing and changing situation relating to the recent outbreak of the new Coronavirus (now named Covid-19). This email explains actions taken so far and how we are planning to respond to ongoing developments.
We have all seen the news reports about the emergence and spread of a new type of Coronavirus – now named Covid-19. You will also be aware of the advice issued by the Government based on the latest scientific and medical advice. ELELS published some previous guidance for members on our website: http://eastlondonandessexliberalsynagogue.org/coronavirus-covid-19/ (with links to some of the Government guidance).
The Synagogue Council has established a small ‘working group’ to monitor the situation and make recommendations to Council or take quick actions should circumstances change. This group monitors official advice from the Government and Public Health England, along with guidance from various other bodies such as the NCVO, Conference of European Rabbis (relevant to practices/behaviours at services, funerals, visiting the sick, etc.) and reassesses the situation with regard to the Synagogue’s activities on a daily basis.
You may have noticed that changes were made to the arrangements for the Purim festivities last week and to the planned Chavurah Supper this Friday. The group is also looking forwards, so discussions are taking place on contingency arrangements for the planned Come Shabbat With Me evening (Friday 27th March) and for the Communal Seder (Thursday 9th April).
At this time, based on current advice, there is no need to cancel any planned ELELS events or services; although minor changes to some of the arrangements may be required. If the situation should change, we will respond quickly to updated advice and make any necessary changes. We do ask that if you are suffering from any of the symptoms (especially if you have recently developed a cough or high temperature) you follow current advice (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/) and stay at home rather than come to Synagogue.
Obviously, things can change rapidly and if they do we will need to communicate with you quickly as possible. The easiest way for ELELS to get urgent messages out to the community is via email (such as this one) but we will also use:
Our website (http://eastlondonandessexliberalsynagogue.org/blog/)
We are also looking into the use of “Telephone Trees” and the existing Keep In Touch scheme as ways to disseminate information and support the needs of our members who may be in isolation.
Please let us know if you are in isolation or if you know of members for whom we may provide support.
If you have any questions or comments on this, as with any Synagogue matters, please do not hesitate to contact either our office or our Chairman, Stewart Spivack.
Best wishes to you all
Rabbi Richard Jacobi & Stewart Spivack
